We all know that walking is good for you. It helps prevent joint, heart and lung problems, but above all, it’s an activity that takes place away from crowded places. In fact, the ‘Via Francigena’ and ’slow food’ excursion takes place mainly in the open air, minimising the environmental impact and making this tour Eco Friendly.
At the pre-arranged meeting point you will be met by a professional driver who will take you to the heart of Irpinia, where with a local expert (Alpine Guide) you will walk for about 3 hours along a path that intersects the historic Via Francigena.
Via Francigena
The route of the Via Francigena dates back to the 7th century when, in an Italy disputed between the Lombards and Byzantines, the need was felt to connect the Kingdom of Pavia with the southern duchies by a sufficiently safe route. It was therefore decided to recover an old route which, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, had fallen into disrepair (‘rupte’, thus giving rise to the term ‘route’ to indicate the direction to follow).
The name Francigena, which literally means ‘road originating from France’, came, around 774 with the arrival in Italy of Charlemagne’s Franks to the rescue of the Pope. As a result, the Francigena, intersecting the main places of Christianity, became the main artery of pilgrimages between Santiago de Compostela, Rome and Jerusalem.
– flat route, approx 9 km, easy going
Slow Food
After your walk ‘through the Middle Ages’, you will meet your trusty driver again who will take you to a historic farmhouse committed to the promotion of slow food. Here, after a 0-km farmer’s lunch, a local expert will take you through the centuries-old olive trees and vineyards of the estate to show you the historic paths of transhumance.
This itinerary has been designed with the aim of minimising environmental impact. Therefore, at the end of the tour, the ‘carbon footprint’ (the amount of CO2 produced during the excursion) will be calculated and compensated with the purchase of carbon credits.
