Alberobello & Matera
Alberobello is a small town at south of Italy (in Puglia Region), and is famous for its typical houses called TRULLI. This limestone dwellings, are remarkable examples of drywall (mortarless) construction, a prehistoric building technique still in use in this region. The trulli are made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighboring fields. Characteristically, they feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs.
Since 1996 the UNESCO Committee has decided to include the Trulli of Alberobello on the List of World Heritage.
In the remote southern region of Basilicata (also called Lucania), just an hour away from Alberobello, there is a town famous for its extensive cave-dwelling districts, an extraordinary city with a thousand facets, thousand colors and always surprising… Matera.
Known as “la Città Sotterranea” (the Subterranean City), Matera is well known for its historical center called “Sassi”, considered World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993 for being “the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem”.
